Garage doors, joinery, appliances, exercise equipment, oversized furniture - freight that isn't neatly boxed on a pallet is usually the freight most likely to arrive damaged if it's packed wrong. We move large and awkward items for suppliers and installers across the North Island every week, and the items that arrive in perfect condition all have one thing in common: they were packed and loaded properly before we ever touched them.
What actually protects an awkward item in transit
Strap or crate it as a single unit
Loose panels and components shift in transit, and shifting is where most transport damage happens - not sudden impacts, but small repeated movement over a long drive.
Protect corners and edges properly
Foam corner guards or cardboard edge protectors matter most on finished surfaces - powder coating, paintwork, veneer - where a scuff is far more visible, and more likely to be rejected by the customer, than general wear.
Keep hardware and fittings with the item
Brackets, fixings, remotes and small parts should travel with the main item, clearly labelled, rather than shipped separately. A perfect item with a missing fixing kit is still a failed delivery.
Tell us about the freight before we arrive
If something needs to travel flat versus on edge, can't be stacked, or needs two people to lift, that's information we need at booking, not at pickup - it changes what vehicle and load plan we send.
We work directly with a number of suppliers and installers moving large or awkward freight regularly, including Windsor Garage Doors, who've used us for door freight around the North Island for several years specifically because we treat this as a specialist job, not a generic pallet delivery. If you're shipping large or awkward items on a regular basis, get in touch about setting up a contract or account arrangement - a consistent process at pickup makes a bigger difference to damage rates than almost anything else.
"We have used Secure Transport for the last seven years and have always valued their exceptional customer service and reliability. Their team is always willing to go above and beyond to ensure that our freight arrives at its destination safely and on time."
