Furniture freight has a specific set of risks that general parcel freight doesn't: large surface areas that scratch, upholstery that marks, and pieces that are often too heavy or awkward for one person to load safely. Does it travel door to door, or through a depot network?
Every extra handling point adds risk. For a $3,000 bed frame, that risk is not trivial.
Is the vehicle set up for the item?
Furniture needs to be secured, not just placed. Ask whether the carrier uses restraint straps, padding or dedicated racking - a curtain-sider with tie-down points is very different to a generic van. Our drivers load and restrain every item to the standards set out in NZTA's Truck Loading Code.
Who's actually loading and unloading it?
Experience matters more with furniture than almost any other freight type, since so much of the risk comes down to how carefully an item is lifted and positioned.
